Firezilla and Windows mount and FTP

Hi all,

I have a windows network that my new ubuntu 10.10 can see with a mount. Trouble is when I use firezilla to ftp I do not see the mount.

Is there any way to for firezilla to see the mount? Is there a better ftp program to use? The networks I am ftp'ing to are all windows networks.

Thanks in advance.

K

What do you mean by "see the mount"? Can you clarify the situation a bit here?

Do you have "filezilla" server running on the windows machine or some other ftp server.

What you mean by mount is normally windows shared folders or cifs/samba in linux, not the same as ftp.

I am just using the filezilla client.

When I look at my 'computer' I can navigate through "Network" to the windows server shares. I need to transfer files from that server. In Filezilla on the left side, which is the local side, I cannot access the network. This is the first linux workstation I have and I have 1 linux server but have not started using it yet. How can I navigate filezilla so I can access the windows server to transfer files from it?

FileZilla is an FTP client, but what you are talking about isn't FTP. You are looking at Windows' built in file sharing, which you can access from Linux through Samba.

So the "place" in "Computer" starts with "smb://"

Is there a way to use this workstation to transfer window files to an outside window server? If so what do I need to do to make this happen? Since this "share" shows smb does this mean samba is installed already?

Filezilla has both a server and a client.

smb:// is samba

Now when you say outside you do know that samba is not a routable protocol unless in a tunnel or vpn.

Outside being other lans outside of my office.

I am determining if linux is going to be a route for my company to switch to from windows. Right now we have 2 windows servers, 1 (new) ubuntu server, many windows w/s and my new linux w/s. I need to transfer files from my servers to the clients in other buildings. Eventually we would like to make a complete switch to linux but I am having trouble just finding the linux server from the linux w/s and being able to transfer files using the linux w/s from my network to other servers located elsewhere.

I know classes would be nice but my company cannot afford to send me.

I figured what I could do to start would be to be able to simply transfer files and vnc.

My list of issues are this:
1. I have tried the Terminal Server Client which seems to never connect to a windows server. The forums I have found that I am not alone on this.

2. I cannot even see my linux server in the "Network" window although I can ping it. (This maybe a lack of my linux knowledge)

3. I cannot file transfer because I cannot get an ftp program to see the local windows networks.

I would really like to get these going to display that linux can work for us. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Then we need to go back to some basics.

I still can't decide how your topology is. Other building may be still on a corporate network or between the buildings and the internet. There may be more than a few issues. Knowing tracert may help or even use pathping in windows.

Yes, in most cases one can access files over the internet. One way is to use a routeable protocol like ftp or http. Both are not secure. Other ways are sftp or https.

We tend to use other ways too. To create an unsecure vnc we use a virtual private network (VPN).

In all these we need to know about the company's access to the net and how it translates to the internal network. NAT is the normal way.

In the normal sense of the terms you can access files between windows and linux in all but the most hardened systems.
