Fedora c1 and SMTP connections using qmail

Hi guys!
I have 2 boxes and I have successfully installed Fedora core 1 in both of them.

I have installed qmail on both machines (following 2 different guides) and even if installations seem good (using webmail I can read, write messages correctly) there must be some mistake:
I cannot send messages using e-mail clients (Outlook and Mozilla), always having "Your server has unexpectedly terminated
the connection" (on Outlook) or impossible to reach the server (on Mozilla)

(I have also tried every combination of smtp authentication)

When I download messages from server everything works fine!
(with both e-mail clients on both fedora machines I have no problem)

The strange thing is that with webmail I can do all normal operations (send e-mails, read received emails, manage e-mails, delete them and so on...)

Is a Fedora problem or qmail?
Or both?

I don't think it's related to relaying since the error message appears during connection to server and, moreover, any user of my domain cannot send e-mail even to himself!!!

How can I verify that port 25 is open and working correctly?
(firewall is disabled using Fedora utility)

Is it important that for this moment I have assigned a private IP of my LAN (192.168.0.181) instead of the public IP address corresponding to the domain name?
(of course my email clients are configured using 192.168.0.181 as POP and SMTP address)

Who can help me?

On both boxes with Fedora I have the same problem, but to install qmail I followed 2 different tutorials.

Thanks in advance!!!

Do you get any error messages in the qmail logs when this happens?

To make sure that qmail is listening and not firewalled off - post the output of:
netstat -nlp
iptables -nL

Well it seems to be running ok - try testing with a telnet connection - on the server itself:
telnet 127.0.0.1 25

You should get something like this (type the commands in bold):
Code:
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to mail.yourhost.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 mail.yourhost.com ESMTP Tue, 27 Apr 2004 18:25:56 +0100
helo myhost.com
250 mail.yourhost.com Hello myhost.com [127.0.0.1]
quit
221 mail.yourhost.com closing connection
Connection closed by foreign host.

When I do

telnet 127.0.0.1 25

it says

Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to 127.0.0.1.
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.

Maybe this is due (I think) to SMTP Auth (I have applied patch to have stmtp auth, in fact, as I said above, in my e-mail client I try with user adn password).

Any idea?

Well, it seems that there's an error loading libc.so.6... but why my server send e-mails correctly uing webmail intead of email clients?
Doesn't webmail use that library?

Can you help me to fix this problem?

Hi Zingaro2002,

Well I am no guru with qmail but I think I have seen this error message on this forum somewhere before.

When you did the install did you change the softlimit to 30000000 or higher in qmail-smtpd/run

If not or if you have not already tired just cd /var/qmail/supervise and than vi qmail-smtpd/run and change the softlimit to 30000000. If it is already 30000000 than try changing it to a higher number.

Don't forget to restart qmail when you save your changes.

qmailctl stop

qmailctl start

Hope this helps.

Take care,

Chris.

YYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS !!!

IT WORKS!

I edited
/var/qmail/supervise/qmail-smtpd/run
changing from
softlimit -m 2000000
to
softlimit -m 30000000

Then qmailctl stop
and
qmailctl start

And everything is fine!!!

Thank you very much!
