External interface to use?

I connect to the net with a PPPoE connection, and I am trying to configure my iptable so I can allow azureus to allow connections and get a faster speed (infamous nat error). I came across some help to allow the connections, but I'm confused as to what my external interface is, would it be ppp0, or eth0? Thanks in advance!
