Hi,
I currently have exim and courier-imap running on a gentoo1.4 box.
I'm having two problems, firstly I can't seem to receive mail (that isn't sent locally), and secondly I can't connect to the SMTP server remotely.
I can send mail to the internet from the local box using "exim -v "foo@bar.com" or mutt. I get no error messages when I send mail to the server (tested from gmx account and hotmail account) but it never arrives.
I can log in and check the mail box on the server with no problems, I just can't receive any mail from the outside world or send mail using a remote MUA.
Do I need more than just exim and courier-imap? Or is the problem in the configuration files?
A few things to check:
1) Is your mx record correct?
2) Do you have any firewall rules?
3) Do you have a public IP for your server or have you configured natting?
mx record is correct.
I do have firewall rules, I'm going to see what happens when I take down the firewall later today.
Not sure what you mean here, if you're asking if other computers can see my computer from the internet then yes they can, I can host a webserver on here with no problems.

Does the server itself have the IP that users connect to or is it a router that has the IP and a port is forwarded to the server? ie does running:
ifconfig
The server has the ip address of 203.208.89.68 and the domain is shadowice.net. The ip 203.208.89.68 is eth2 on the server, eth 1 is 192.168.10.1, and is the default gateway of the local network. eth0 doesn't work under linux (on board network card) and I don't have the knowlage to get it to, not that it matters, eth1 and eth2 work fine.
Sorry to sound ignorant, but what is an A record?
edit: Nothing changes if I take down the firewall.
Well it's all working now and I didn't change any MX records. It was a shorewall problem. I've removed shorewall and I'm now doing the firewall by hand.
