eth1 problems

hi,

Im trying running redhat 8.0 as a home network gateway. My ntl cable modem connection on eth0 works fine, however my other network card running on eth1, which connects to the other computer on the network (running windows 98), cannot be activated.

the output from 'ipconfig eth1' is:

[root@BAZZA root]# ifconfig eth1
eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:40:05:73:098
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:24 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:8208 (8.0 Kb)
Interrupt:5 Base address:0x240

the output from 'dmesg | grep eth1' is:

[root@BAZZA root]# dmesg | grep eth1
divert: not allocating divert_blk for non-ethernet device eth1
eth1: NE2000 found at 0x240, using IRQ 5.

When linux boots up it hangs on "bringing up interface eth1" for about a minute and then reports the following error:

Feb 4 14:00:23 BAZZA ifup:
Feb 4 14:00:23 BAZZA ifup: Determining IP information for eth1...
Feb 4 14:01:31 BAZZA ifup: failed.
Feb 4 14:01:31 BAZZA network: Bringing up interface eth1: failed

Previously on this forum I was told this maybe because eth1's IP address was trying to be generated dynamically using dhcp and changing this to a statically allocated IP address would fix it. This worked, but I want to dhcp to allocate the other machine on the network an IP address dynamically because I sometimes use windows XP (I have a dual boot on this machine) as the network gateway using dhcp and this works at the moment without a problem.

Any ideas guys?

Cheers Andy

Please clarify? You have a dhcp server on your network that your machine sees when it's booted into XP but not when booted into linux?

Or do you mean that your machine shares it's network connection when in XP and you want to do the same thing from linux? You can search the forums here, there are many threads that deal with sharing your network connection and there are also good HOWTO documents at www.tldp.org such as the Home-Network-mini-HOWTO

hi darian,

Thanks for your reply.

The problem is that my machine shares it's internet connection under XP and I want to do the same with linux. At the moment eth1 will not activate/come up (see errors in previous post) which, presumably, I need to get working before I set about configuring the internet connection sharing.

Re: eth1 problems

If you are using XP's internet connection sharing then XP doesn't use DHCP to start eth1, it uses an IP address that XP assigned. So you shouldn't try to use DHCP (client) in linux, you would also want to assign an IP address to the network card. Since linux doesn't assume to set up an address for you you have to pick one, a good way to do that is described in several HOWTOs such as the one referenced above.

So you stated that the network card works when you assign an IP and you want to set up sharing, see above. If the hetwork card doesn't start when you assign an IP then it isn't working and yes you do need to fix that before trying to share a connection.
