DSL (The 'net connection) status issue

Ok, this isn't major, but its something I got used to. With Kinternet, I could see the speed and whatnot going on over my net, so I could keep a closer eye on what was going on and see if there was a problem (odd transfer time, ect.), but since my upgrade, I don't see how to do that. I'd like to have some form of status system, plus do I need kinternet/kppp, ect? newbie I be, and I like asking questions
