Doesn't recognize internet connection !!

Hi, Everyone and blessings to all. I attempted to download and install Linux XP and the installation appeared to be a success. But after install of course the system reboots. Well after rebooting before opening up the desktop it forces me to set up the domain or something It would not recognize my internet/network connection. My ISP provider doesn't use any type of authentic. My internet connection is automatically configured through my modem. How do I get Linux XP to recognize my internet connection and finish the final process so that I can load into desktop ?? I also had a very similar problem with Linux Ubuntu Studio as well. I installed it and I was able to get into the desktop but still was unable to establish an internet connection. What am I missing here???

We could help you better if you told us the sort of modem you have, what you have done to make the Internet connection work and what symptoms lead you to conclude that you are "unable to establish an internet connection" including copying-and-pasting any error messages.

RE -

I attempted to download and install Linux XP and the installation appeared to be a success. But after install of course the system reboots. Well after rebooting before opening up the desktop it forces me to set up the domain or something It would not recognize my internet/network connection. Due to the fact that it does not recognize the internet connection, it would not finish the set up. So I was unable to log onto the desktop. I don't know of any way to paste and stick without being able to log into the desktop. In stead of automatically establishing an internet connection like Ubuntu or most any other OS, it said that the internet connection was not found. I tried using the USB and I tried the Ethernet cable with no results. It just kept prompting me to set up some sort of domain name and code. But My Server doesn't use any Authentic requirements. I am using a Motorola SB5101U Surfboard Cable Modem, and it automatically establishes the IP Address. So I dont understand why Linux XP doesn't recognize the Connection. I also had the same problem when I installed Ubuntu 9.10 Studio Edition, only I was at least able to get to the Desktop. It just would not connect to the internet. It kept saying that the internet connection not found.

How are you connecting to your SB5101U: by Ethernet cable or USB cable?

The manual for the SB5101U Surfboard Cable Modem does not mention LAN configuration or configuring the computer any way except automatically so the SB5101U probably only supports computers using automatic IP configuration, that is using DHCP.

I don't use Linux XP or DHCP so can't give much more help.

You are unable to log in to the desktop but you can probably log in to a command prompt. Do you get a login prompt? If so, can you log in? If so, what is the output of the ifconfig command? The interesting part (but I don't know how it looks when using DHCP -- hopefully someone will help with that) might be something like
Code:
inet addr:192.168.1.47 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

I have tried both ethernet and USB, with still no success.I also so have the same problem with Ubuntu Studio 9.10, Only with Ubuntu Studio I am able to at least log into the desktop. I just cant get online. I don't have these problems with Ubuntu 9.10, Xubuntu, or Kubuntu. They pick up on the the internet connection immediately. I just plug in the modem, (Ethernet,or USB) and it is ready to go. The only reason I was hoping to use Linux XP is from what I understand, It has a lot of Microsoft compatibilities. Do You know anything about Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala ?? Because with my 9.10 Karmic, I am unable to upload my photos into myspace. When I link from myspace to my desktop to view my photos it just gives me an empty box as if their are no Pictures their. But yet I can view my pictures from my Desktop. Would you happen to have any solutions for that problem ?? I apologize if this may not be the right place for posting this question. I just thought while you are helping me I would bring it up. Thanks So Much for all your help. If you find any solutions for the Linux XP problem please keep me informed. In the mean time I am using 9.10 Koala os. If I can get my pictures to load on myspace I will be most happy to have that success. Thanks Again !!!
