DNS namserver can't be found

I'm having problem with my DNS for 2 weeks. I have mydomain.com point to my DNS server. But when I check with dnsreport.com, I got an error stated that my nameserver listed at root did not repond. On my /etc/resolv.conf, I have the search directive set to my domain and the nameserver is set to my ISP DNS resolver. I also tried set the namserver to my server IP, but it doesn't work either. Also, I left the /etc/hosts file the default, which begin with 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain local. Can anybody tell me what's wrong here.

Your primary dns server must be listed at the root servers. If it is the only dns server then it will not be found otherwise

Thanks for ur reply DavidPhillips. I do have a primary and secondary dns server listed at the root server point to my DNS server, but none of the nameserver listed at the root respond. I could ping the namserver though. I would think that my ISP is blocking the DNS port 53. Do anybody know how to check to see if the port is enable?

you can try to resolve an address with your dns server from a remote location using dig

dig @yourserver.com somedomain.com

The @servername is to specify a dns server to use. This is followed by the name of the host to resolve
