Hi,

First: give an IP Address to your XP machine ethernet card e.g. 192.168.0.1 with subnet 255.255.255.0 and d'nt mention any DNS and Gateway here.

second: on linux machine $netconfig or $ifconfig and set IP Address DNs and Gateway e.g. IP Address: 192.168.0.2 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.0.1 (your XP Machine) DNS: (The Actual DNS that is given by ISP, most of the time it is a real public IP).

hope answer the question

Ah. thankyou. I'll try that as soon as I get home tonight.
@rednuht: actually it's the other way round. The XP machine can connect to internet through 56Kbps modem and has a LAN port unused Bcos we've not got broadband (yet). so I'm trying to use the XP as a gateway. It was like bangin' my head against a brick wall.

Google for internet connection sharing (ICS). There is lots of info on how to set it up on the internet. Windows ICS automatically configures the selected network adapter with the IP address of 192.168.0.1. This can not be changed. ICS also has a DHCP server. If the network adapter is setup and configured for DHCP you are set. If not using a hub or switch between the PCs then you will need a crossover ethernet cable.
