dhcpd and ifconfig

Hi;

I have very little networking experience and am trying to setup a gateway to my lan that will sit inbetween my cable modem (externel) and internal router.

I have two network cards in my gateway, both of which i know are working. eth0 is connected to router & eth1 is connected to net. I have set up eth1 without a glitch, and I can surf the web on the gateway.

eth0 is being a pain to set up. I have attempted to assign static IP addresses to both eth0 and the wan port on the router but for some reason, though both devices say they have the same ip i cannot ping any of the router ports from my gateway (i know these ports are operational, cause I can ping the router from any internel computer).

I also tried to setup dhcp on the gateway to automatically assign an ip address to the router, but once again it wont work. Whenever I run dhcpd eth0, I get: dhcpd.conf is not configured for subnet 0.0.0.0 ......

So Im stuck. Im trying to setup a subnet (remember very little networking experience) by editing /etc/network/interfaces but I cant set it up unless I set my eth0 port to static IP which takes me back to square 1.

Anyone see any flaws in my logic or method? I am missing something? All responses are appreciated, and guides / links are really really appreciated.

Thanks

(btw Im a long time linux user and am setting up my gatway with debian, but I dont think that'd matter)

I have a similar setup, however I don't use a router since a hub or switch will do for the internal network. Let's see your dhcpd.conf file.

Also if you make eth0 and the router wan port static they cannot both have the same address. They should be on the same subnet. Eg, you might configure eth0 as 192.168.57.1 ( netmask 255.255.255.0 ) and configure wan port on the router to 192.168.57.2 ( netmask 255.255.255.0 ). You'd then tell the router to use eth0 as its gateway. Then ensure that ip forwarding in on, on the Linux box.
