my problem is that i cannot get my internet working at all, i can ping localhost, my router assigned ip, and even the router itself ie: gateway ip. but nothing outside of my lan can be reached. on boot dhcp is started but it just shows an error icon in gnome, i forget what network monitoring program it is. so i tried to do a static ip with ifconfig eth0, and it worked to atleast get me pinging my lan and router. i have dhcp enabled on my router and would rather use that but right now anything static or dhcp to get my internet running on gentoo would be nice, i setup nameservers, and even looked into my /etc/conf.d/net to see if i didnt uncomment something. also tried doing modprobe 8139cp and 8139too. even though my nic was recognized during autodetect. i dunno what else to do. short from pulling out my router each time i wanna use the internet in gentoo and installing a pppoe script.
If you can ping your ISP's gateway, then the problem is not with your set up. If you can ping the IP of your gateway, you might need to check /etc/resolve.conf. You might just not be resolving IPs...
I'm sure you realize your router has 2 IP addresses. A private IP and a public IP assigned by your ISP. Just to make sure, you are able to ping that IP right?
