DHCP edit ?'s

Hello,

I installed Internet Connection Sharing which setup DHCP for me transparently.
I need to add my ISP's DNS servers to dhcp file.

My questions are which file.

/etc/dhcpd.conf or dhcp.conf.orig ?

The file that I edited was dhcpd.conf and this is what it looks like currently.

-------------------------------------------------

ddns-update-style none;
subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
# default gateway
option routers 192.168.1.1;
option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;

option domain-name "homeland.net";
option domain-name-servers 207.217.120.83 207.217.77.82;

range dynamic-bootp 192.168.1.16 192.168.1.253;
default-lease-time 21600;
max-lease-time 43200
-----------------------------------------
So when I put in the ISP's dns servers do I put a space between the ip addresses, a comma? Not sure?

Right now I statically assigned the first address on both machines because they weren't getting dns resolution.

When I get the dhcpd.conf file edited correctly and reboot the 2 linux dhcp clients, shouldn't I just be able to look at their /etc/resolv.conf files or do I need to look somewhere else on the clients to verify?

Thanks,
JBanks

the .orig is just a backup in case you need it. you probably want a comma for the dns entries, check the dhcpd manpage for details: "man dhcpd.conf"

DHCP edit ?'s

Thanks Chris,

So it looks as though I need a "," then a space. Now I need to restart the dhcp dameon and after looking at the man page I'm not really sure how to do the following:
_________________________________________

Whenever changes are made to the dhcpd.conf file, dhcpd must be restarted. To restart dhcpd, send a SIGTERM (signal 15) to the pro-ess ID contained in /var/run/dhcpd.pid, and then re-invoke dhcpd.
Because the DHCP server database is not as lightweight as a BOOTP database, dhcpd does not automatically restart itself when it sees a change to the dhcpd.conf file.
__________________________________________

Send a "SIGTERM" to the process ID contained in /var/run/dhcpd.pid?
Is sigterm a command that can be issued via the command line from any location?
I didn't see a dhcpd.pid in the "run" directory. I'm assuming this is because I miss configured the dhcpd.conf file and now its not starting. Does it creat the dhcpd.pid file if configured correctly?

I don't understand exactly what the above statement wants and where?

I know that I could just reboot but I would like to have the ability to restart on the fly without having to do a full system reboot

I do read through the man pages but I find that most of the time its like these were written by engineers for engineers. I do know that they'll eventually start making sense though as I spend more time with linux.

Thanks for the help.

Got it all figured out and working correctly now.

Once I corrected my edit mistake I then had to reboot. In the man page of dhcpd they say Re-Envoke dhcpd. I can only assume that this means reboot because the specifically say that you cannot SIGUP the process.

Once I did that dhcpd started and my dhcp clients got their needed dns info.

The "Rute User's Tutorial and Expostion" is an undiscovered gold mine.
