dhcp does not assign IP to nic

I've been tryin to get my DHCP(router) to assign an ip to my nic but it doesn't. If i manually assign it, it cannot ping my other computer or router and is not seen on the network.
Running Vector Linux 4.0 (slackware 9.0.0)
I'm not sure what I am doing wrong.

First off, when you plug the network cable into your system, do you get a link light?

Even though the NIC may physically on, linux may not be able to detect its connection with the router. Please specify your router model.

Do you have a switch or router, and what do you have for a internet connection?
