DHCP and DNS and configuring both...

I am trying to set up a home network with BIND 9.2.1 and DHCP 3.0pl1. As far as I know, I have the DHCP server configured properly, but DNS is another story altogether. The real kicker is getting DHCP to update DNS dynamically. I'm also hindered by not knowing how to interpret output from dig and tcpdump. Obviously, this is not really detailed as to the exact problem, but if someone would let me know what he or she needs to help me out, I'd be glad to post it. Thanks in advance.

At www.linuxdoc.org (the Linux documentation project) under Mini-HOWTO's, there is a Home-Networking mini howto that will take you through the very basics of DHCP and cacheing nameserver setup.

Cheers

if you want to update BIND dynamically, you need to run a service on your linux system and a client program on your windows box. you can get information for both at www.dhis.org . dhis is a daemon that runs in the background an works with bind to update the dns tables. the client program connects to the dhis service and tells it to update the IP addr. so that you can always access the client by hostname and not have to worry about finding out the IP and worrying about when it's going to change.

good luck!
