Determining the network throughput speed

Hi there --

I want to determine the average throughput speed between a local and remote site. To that end I have run a series of test copies. The environment for the test included exporting a filesystem from the remote site, and mounting it as an NFS mount on one of our local servers.

The tests involved copying, via the cp command, a large directory from one local filesystem to the NFS mount. The directories ranged in size from 2.3 to 4.3 gigabytes. The average amount of time to complete the copy in all cases was around one minute.

What is the mathematical equation used to determine the average throughput speed? If one is not available would the Iperf utility be an alternate means of getting the answer?

Thanks.
