Unhappy Delay when configuring extra IPs

Hi,

I have a laptop from work which, unfortunately, not only runs Windoze, but has a lot of it's settings locked down, including a fixed IP configuration.

Thus isn't a major issue, since I have managed to add extra IP addresses to my Linux Box (LFS 6.0) to make it "look" like my work system so I can get onto the 'net at home.

The problem is, if I reboot my server and execute the code below, it takes about 2 hours before I can surf the 'net from the laptop! Anyone know why this takes so long? Can I do anything to improve matters?

The two entries are because, at work, the default GW and the DNS server are different boxes - it home, my Linux Box needs to pretend to be both!

Many thanks,

Paul

Code:
#!/bin/bash
ifconfig eth0:1 10.12.128.30 netmask 255.255.252.0
ifconfig eth0:2 10.12.128.11 netmask 255.255.252.0

Start with running tcpdump on server. Try to access the network from laptop. What server sees?

Smile Solved!

Well, my server died after a power outage and I rebuilt it. As I was watching the various packages install and come up, I noticed bind attaching itself to the individual addresses.

Once I got the server back up, I added the extra addresses and preparedto wait. Inspiration hit me and I reloaded bind and BINGO! it worked straight away!

So, it would seem that bind refreshes itself periodically, but adding an address to a box doesn't automatically make that adddress a dns server even if bind is running.

Thanks to anyone who looked at this :-)

Paul
