Debian ip issues

Hi All

We have 2 Vm servers running on a Hetzner Virtual Machine. The Ubuntu machine works fine with no issues but the Debian 1 has no network. On Ubuntu our /etc/network/interfaces file looks like this (ip's changed)

auto ens18
iface ens18 inet static
address 8.10.174.161
netmask 255.255.255.248
gateway 8.10.126.115
network 8.10.174.160
broadcast 8.10.174.167

If I use these detail on Debian 8.6 but changing the last octet of the ip with our next available ip I can't ping anything and network even shows as down. If set the eht0 (this is the debian 1) up it still does not work and ifconfig show no ip details for eth0.

To test I built a Debian Gui version and added the ip, mash and gw in the gui and it works fine.

Can anyone advise where I am going wrong

Thanks

Glenn

What is the output of ifconfig -a?

I don't think Debian 8 understands the laughingly misnamed predictable device naming convention.

Have to tried eth0 instead of ens18?
