D-Link router's USB port printer problems

Hi there,

I am trying to connect my linux computer (Granular) to my D-Link DIR-628 wireless router with and attached Brother HL-2140 laser printer. (via the D-Link's built-in USB port)

With Windoze, and SharePort, it works fine. Stand-alone directly, the printer connected to my Linux box, it works fine. But try and use CUPS' LPD/LPR direction to the router's address (192.168.0.1) has failed. No printing.

Tried the following: lpd://192.168.0.1/lp and lpd://192.168.0.1:9100 among other combinations. No luck. Sits in queue and doesn't print.

Anyone had the same problems with a D-Link router and got around it? Any help would be most appreciated.

D-Link doesn't seem to have it documented which port or address it uses for the USB.

Thanks.

I assumed you installed the shareport utility on the windows PC.

From the documentation and googling I have found on the web it does not appear that shareport is compatible with linux. The router's usb port is not configured as a dedicated print server so lpd is not going to work.

Rats!

Thanks anyhow, don't even want to think I could even hope to accomplish running Shareport within WINE.

But, there was something else about using another networked Windoze computer w/the printer in question shared via that...hmm. I guess I will keep trying.

Again, many thanks for your time.

Yes you could either attach the printer to the windows or linux box. You need to verify that samba is installed on the linux box. And there is lots of information for sharing printers via samba. If the printer is connected to the windows box cups would be setup similar i.e. smb://windows_pc/printer_share.
