Creating a non-transparent network bridge in Debian?
Hello,
I am trying to set up a network like this:
Internet <---> Router <---> Debian server <---> Windows PC
I want the server and PC to both have internet access, and I want to be able to forward ports from the router to the server.
I know how to configure the server to give the PC internet access, but how would I assign an IP address to the server and give it internet access? I have used a very similar setup a few years ago, but I can't remember how to do this.
I am using the router to forward traffic, but the problem is that I can't forward traffic from the router to the server because the router cannot "see" the server, which I presume is because bridges are transparent by default. Therefore, I need a way to set up the server to act as a network bridge, but still be a client on the network.
I have the server acting as a bridge, but I need a way to make it visible to the router. Looking in the network map on the PC, it currently shows the server as a switch.
I've been trying different things, and since I'm sure that my bridge configuration is correct, I think the router may be just be finally giving up on me (it's a bit old).
If I can find another router somewhere, I'll try it out and see if that's the problem.
Ah, I forgot that you can use ifconfig with bridges. That didn't exactly solve my problem though, I had to tweak my router a bit. I had to set up the bridge and then restart the router for it to be recognized.
