Question connecting to internet outside of root

I am new to all this, and my husband has put me on linux detail. I need to figure out how to connect without doing it through root. Any help would be awesome, thanks!

Logon as a different user and connect. Unless there is some special restriction it should work. Any user on my linux box can surf or navigate the internet.

I tried that, but I don't have access to things like the control panel through it. My husband took some of that stuff off so the kids wouldn't mess with it. Now he can't seem to remember how to put it back.

I am really inept when it comes to all this I just go into a network configurator. Click on ppp2 which is labeled as the interface, I then just click on activate and it dials. I am so sorry, I must be driving everyone nuts!!!

Does it dial and appear to connect when you're logged in as another user?

Something you can try is to put yourself into the "dialout" group. You'll probably have to be root to do this, and you should be able to find someplace in the configuration system where you can do this. Of course, you'll have to be root to do this.

pilot1 : The thing is...I don't seem to have access to my dialout unless I'm logged in as root. It seems to be blocked out.

mrmcgibby : I will look at that, thanks!

You're using Red hat 6.. is upgrading to a later version an option? Or do you have a reason for using 6?
