Command line network config issues

Hello All,

I am running a console-based system, trying to get an ethernet connection running. Kinda new to this process, but I have been following the instructions given by this website:

http://www.linuxheadquarters.com/how...rkconfig.shtml

The module for my network card is loaded.

Using ifconfig I have tried to enter the information provided by my ISP:

Default Settings:
Static: 172.16.1.1 - .32
Dynamic: 172.16.1.33 - .250
Reserved: 172.16.1.251-.254
Subnet: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway: 172.16.0.1
DNS: 172.16.0.1

Option 1:
Static: 192.168.1.1 - .32
Dynamic: 192.168.1.33 - .250
Reserved: 192.168.1.251-.254
Subnet: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: 192.168.0.1

Option 2:
Static: 10.0.1.1 - .32
Dynamic: 10.0.1.33 - .250
Reserved: 10.0.1.251-.254
Subnet: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway: 10.0.0.1
DNS: 10.0.0.1

I have followed these instructions pretty closely, but maybe I am missing something.

When I ifconfig eth0 after configuring the addresses are shown, along with UP BROADCAST RUNNING.

If I ping myself it is all good, no lost packets.

But if I ping another IP no packets are sent back.

I am getting to be at my wit's end. Have tried everything.

Any advice would be welcome. Code in particular would be awesome.
Thanks!

i'm not sure i understand why you have all those options, and why each has so many different IPs... didn't your ISP give you *one* IP to use?? also, are you sure you aren't supposed to use DHCP so that this is done automatically for you??

I should have stated I am using command line DSL and the router is a 2wire (sbcglobal), if that helps.

I was trying to configure a static connection because it seemed easier. That information about the IP is copied from my ISP's website: http://help.sbcglobal.net/article.php?item=2556

It states you can use either static or dynamic configs.

I would rather use DHCP but I have no idea how to do it. I am new to command line network configuation.

Thanks for your response!

i did a quick google and it sounds like DSL's network configuration program can be called with the command:
Code:
netcardconfig
i'm not sure, though, as i don't have DSL...
