centos 7 not seeing wireless after clean install

Not sure if this is the correct group to put this in. If not please feel free to move it to another area.

I have installed CentOS7.4 on several laptops to play with.
One is a Dell m4500, IBM think pad R61 (3 of them) and an HP probook 4540.

All seem to have the same issue. EXCEPT the HP 4540

For the purpose of this issue I will focus on the Dell M4500 to keep it simple. If there is such a thing

I loaded clean from the DVD and during the OS load it saw the networking.
I was able to enter in my SSID and my passcode etc.

When the system rebooted to the final configuration screen it saw the wireless fine.

Booted to multi user mode and no wireless when I logged in with either my ID or root.

If I look at the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts I see 2 listings for the wireless.

fcfg-em1 ifdown-post ifup-ib ifup-TeamPort
ifcfg-home ifdown-ppp ifup-ippp ifup-tunnel
ifcfg-home_1 ifdown-routes ifup-ipv6 ifup-wireless
ifcfg-lo ifdown-sit ifup-isdn ifup-wireless.orig
ifdown ifdown-Team ifup-plip init.ipv6-global
ifdown-bnep ifdown-TeamPort ifup-plusb keys-farscape
ifdown-eth ifdown-tunnel ifup-post network-functions
ifdown-ib ifup ifup-ppp network-functions-ipv6
ifdown-ippp ifup-aliases ifup-routes
ifdown-ipv6 ifup-bnep ifup-sit
ifdown-isdn ifup-eth ifup-Team

So it does appear to be there.

When I go into network manager to try and use it no wireless networks are found.

Also I notice on the laptop the wireless light is off.

Several posts said that there could be an issue with network manager but I have unistalled and reinstalled it. same issue.

[root@labsystem1 ~]# nmcli --ask dev wifi connect home
Error: No network with SSID 'home' found.

Let me know what other loges you would like to see.

I appreciate you help on this matter.
Thank you

The error message your getting says there is no "home" SSID found.

Code:
Error: No network with SSID 'home' found.
Are you sure that's correct?

When I had Cenos6.9 on the systems there was no issue at all seeing the wireless.
I know 7 is a completely new release . Just thought I would mention it.

Just edit your post, if you need to update a post rather than making new posts - unless it's reply to someone else's.

I just edited my reply (post #2), could you have a look at it?

Edit: I guess given you don't seem to want to answer the question, the most likely issue is that, you are specifying an incorrect SSID. (network name)

Best of luck with it.

Sorry I don't want answers? I have not been on-line all day. I posted this before I went to work.

I made multiple posts as it seems to be too much information to read all at once. I was trying to be considerate as well as give as much information as i could

I do have the correct ssid. The issue is that network manager never sees the SSID .

Look again at my logs. It shows when I installed the networking on build it saw it just fine.
But after I reboot to multi user mode I did not see the networking.

The hardware does not seem to be active now when it was earlier.

First thing, you need to use CODE tags when posting command outputs and in one post, otherwise it's very difficult to read.

Second, making multiple posts means that you knock your question off of the Zero Reply Threads, which means that your question maybe missed by members that may be able to help you with your problem(s).

Third, the only error message I'm therefore seeing from your outputs is the one I stated in post #2. As you say and from the outputs you have posted, there does not appear to be any problems with NetworkManager or your hardware being recognised by CentOS.

Therefore, once again, the only thing I can suggest is that you have specified the wrong SSID. As, I am also using a wireless connection right now in CentOS 7 and I'm not having any issues connecting to my wifi access point.

I suggest you re-check your SSID and maybe try a different one and see if that helps in anyway. Beyond that, there is nothing more I can tell you.

Edit: Have you checked your wifi access point?? Is it working?? (It doesn't sound like that is the issue to me, based on what you have already said - but still worth checking, just in case)

I checked my access point. That is how I am posting this information. I am on another laptop with wireless using the correct SSID so I can post to the forum.

As for your other comments dully noted. As I said I was gathering as much information as I could before someone looked at the problem.

Yes I know my SSID.

Yes it is correct.

As I said the hardware light for the wireless is not on after the final reboot so it looks like it was disabled in the OS for some reason. May be you missed that point.

I also mentioned this is happening on 3 laptops. So the issue is not unique to this one system.
All were running CentOS 6.9 then upgraded to 7.4 with a new build. Oh wait I said that all ready.

My Android devices log into the access point just fine and so does my windows devices.

Something in the OS is disabling the wirelesses devices.
They were all seen on the initial load.

I would appreciate anyone else input into this

Thank you in advance for your time.

This is my kernel info

Linux labsystem1 3.10.0-693.11.6.el7.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Jan 4 01:06:37 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

-

Edit

I do have another HP laptop that is running 7.4 and is working fine on the wireless.
This is the kernel info from that if it helps.

Linux LT102 3.10.0-693.11.6.el7.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Jan 4 01:06:37 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Found this on another site but I don't think it is the issue as the the HP is on wireless

https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/40042/

Ok both system have been patched to latest level. One works one does not. The IBM r60 still not working but Im focusing on the Dell at the moment.

I'll get on the censo.org site and see about filing a bug

It must me something disabling the hardware.

My HP shows the wireless light on Dell does not. Makes me think the radio is off.
I did try a clean install (Dell) and same result with and without patching from the CD.
During the install the Dell wireless light was on no problem.

Got some info over the weekend on this so posting it.
Hope this helps someone else as it took a bit of digging.

Sorry if I should not cross post sites.
https://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOS7
https://wiki.centos.org/FAQ/CentOS7#ethernet

i still have to verify this information on my system.
