I recently installed RH9.0 on my comp, it a Asus an A7N8X-X with an integrated NIC (Nvidia nForce MCP NW adapter). I never had any troubles in the past with many Linux installs since it always detected and got my cards to work for me!
Probably why I am stucked now!
Anyhow, on using the IFCONFIG I get the LO card:
Lien encap: Boucle locale
inet adr:127.0.0.1...
If this is needed I will write the whole thing, but I found this is only a virtual card...
I tried to use the NW config GUI tool, on the material tab it does see a card, it calls it a 3c501 (I don't know why)
When I tried to activate that, I would get a message that the TULIP tool is not present so the card cannot be activated
I then installed a KNE100TX kingston card in there.
I restarted and during the boot up, I get the same TULIP tool missing message and that the card will not get installed
I am unfamiliar with Linux and where to go to get what I need to configure this thing, do I have to re-install the whole thing? Of do I simply need to add the parameters in the right places?
check out whether your network card has been detected by browsing the file /etc/sysconfig/hwconf. if kudzu has detected the card then there will be a driver description there. then try installing drivers.
I could not get them to install so I had to install the redhat development packages (in the rpm section) and down load the tar ball version.
I extracted the tar ball in /usr/src and ran make and it thought about it for a min or two and then it came back with no errors. I then ran make install and that also worked......I then ran insmod nvnet and low n behold it ativated....
This then showed my onboard nic in the hardware section which it didn't do before....
Here are two links with hints and tips ppl gave me...
Well, I got a bit baffled with how to get the nVedia driver, since my comp could not connect to the net, and I am still learning how to install a driver! I got my situation solved by simply adding a kingston NIC and then I re-installed RH 9.0, it took the NIC up and installed it, it is all fine now, this would confirm it was a driver issue.
I forgot to add I was running two comps...I downloaded off one and then copied the files to floppy and transferred to the other. I know what you mean tho. I had my hard disk go dodgy on me and had to do a complete re-install after hours of trying to get the thing formatted. I even have a returns number and error code off it to send to maxtor.....
For some reason onboard nics always give me so much crap.....
