Can see it but don't have permission

Hello...I am looking for help in learning how to properly network my new Debian Linux box with my Windows XP professional computer. I can see the computer from Linux, but when I try to open it, I am told I do not have permission to access it. I have tried creating a user with the same user name and password as my Windows account and have made sure the linux box is on the same workgroup as my XP machine. Oddly, from Linux I can see my husband's computer, and can even get into it (am prompted for my windows user name and password) successfully. Also from his computer I can see the linux machine, and am also prompted for a user name and password but am unsure which one to use. (both he and I have Windows admin rights on our pcs)

I know this must stink of "Newbie." Any help you can give would not only relieve my stress, but make me smarter. Thank you.

Jenn

Well if you can ping each device's IP address then you are all on the same network, or at least configured to talk to each other. But your goal is unclear. I believe you would like to try to remotely get into each other boxes?

Are you using ssh to log into your Linux computer? Are you using some kind of remote desktop to log into your Windows machine?
