Question Can only ping local IPs - WiFi says associated with working AP

Problem: No Internet connectivity, can’t ping 1.1.1.1, can’t ping DNS names etc
Distro: IPFire 2 (based on Linux From Scratch)
Type: Headless (no GUI, except a web interface that can be ignored)
Details:

This system uses wpa_supplicant and init.d

I have been troubleshooting for a week, and have tried many things. In the wpa_supplicant logs it shows no errors. The output from ifconfig and iwconfig look good.

Any other device works fine with the same router upstream. Within the Linux system the only symptom is the lack of Internet connectivity. Clients connected to this Linux system can reach ping it.

Previously the output of ifconfig showed no IPv4 (inet) address altho it did show an IPv6 address. Someone had me try to manually set the inet address but that didn’t fix the problem. I also tried manually setting the default gateway but that also didn’t solve the problem.

If I connect to a different WiFi AP the same thing happens. If I go into AP’s logs it does not show a connection to the IPFire Linux system even though IPFire shows it successfully associated in ifconfig and the wpa_supplicant log, etc.

Someone also suggested setting up a static IP. I’m looking into that now but my routers admin interface app doesn’t directly support it so if there are other things to try first that might be better.

Some basic information requested:

Ok, more details would be help here. I assume that your network environment has a DHCP server (perhaps your router), and for whatever reason (likely incorrect config), you're not getting a DHCP-assigned address? Which DHCP client are you using? When connected, at least show us
Code:
ip address
Code:
ip route
Code:
grep -i name /etc/resolv.conf
Copy the output to a text file, and transfer via a USB memory stick to an internet-connected PC to post that info here.

I am a bit confused as to how the network is configured. Please provide more information.

Are you using the WiFi on the ipfire system to connect to another wireless access point? The wlan adapter is basically the red zone?

Are you having problems with wifi clients on this system connecting to the internet through an upstream router?
