Can i stream videos, music ower network?
Hello,
i have an Ubuntu 12.04 with LXDE desktop
+ i have command line CentOS linux backup server with my movies and music on it
i want to achieve this: easilly play (stream) videos and music from my backup server over internet while working on my Ubuntu LXDE desktop.
How to achieve it and is that possible?
i found sshfs ( man sshfs) but im unsure if it supports this

sure, sshfs will support it
essentially your files on the _server_ will appear as local files
assuming you are on a LAN you should be fine
however, if you are on a lan then samba might be easier
samba has the advantage of serving to devices such as tablets, without the need to root/jailbreak
sshfs should be more secure, and I think easier over a WAN, ( employing portforwards on router )
but, samba on a local network is probably what you need,
details on the network will get you better advice

will be enough for music but will not for videos. But you can check it yourself and you will see.

in that case, sshfs would be ideal
but like pan64 says, you may struggle with video
although you may get some joy by increasing the cache for 'local files' in your video client
450kbs d/l is on the low side

sshfs is the only solution i know of that can mount drives thru networks.
also, xbmc is a really good media client.
