I'm Dialing in to NoCharge Connect via my cell phone... I can't seem to start PPP... it's very strange

Here's the modem log:

pppd[0]: Serial connection established.
pppd[0]: speed 1500000 not supported
pppd[0]: Using interface ppp0
pppd[0]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyACM0
Status is: disconnecting ****(At this point I disconnected since i couldn't get an IP)****
pppd[0]: Terminating on signal 15.
Status is: disconnecting
pppd[0]: Connection terminated.
Status is: disconnected
pppd[0] died: non-normal exit
As you see, It seems to physically connect just fine, but I don't know what command WvDial needs to use to start PPP... Windows (grr) unfortunately can connect without any problems. I tried leaving the terminal up to see what hidden magic it uses, but I get to the same spot, then i after i close the terminal window, windows will connect... Bah.

At that point in the sequence it looks like you have sucessfully connected to an old fashioned Bulletin Board System, not an ISP. The 9600 baud speed also is consistent with a BBS from 10 years ago. Assuming that you haven't hit a time warp, are you sure that you have the correct phone number?

You could use minicom to connect to that phone number. When you get to the > prompt I bet that you could type in help and it would work. The output from the help command might tell you how to connect to the Internet through this phone number.

I took your advice... I launched minicom and when i got to the prompt i typed help. Heh, guess what? It repeated the available commands menu... Not much help huh?

I was looking through the Provider Setup in YaST (i'm running SuSe) and I noticed a box called "stupid mode." It's description was "...disable detection of terminal prompts..." or some jazz. I checked that box, and boom! WzDial connected and I was hooked up and ready to go!

Yes, 9.6k would be consistent, but that's because T-Mobile CSD(circuit switched data) limits fax and data calls over their network to 9600(9.6k). bummer, huh?

I tried with my friend's Alltel phone... 14.4k, little better, but the acutal data throughput was slower... Strange, probably something with Altel's network..

If you're interested in connecting like i do over a cell phone (handy for laptop users like myself) you can get totaly free internet access from www.nocharge.com (or if you live in Seattle). T-Mobile allows CSD connections, so does Alltel... 2.4.21-rc1 and later has support for motorola usb phone modems. It just uses your normal minutes.... kinda handy
