Can't see router from Mandrake 9.1

I've just installed Mandrake 9.1 but my lan card can't see my router. All works fine under XP so no hardware problems. My ifcfg-eth0 file is:
device=eth0
BOOTPRO=static
IPADDR=10.0.0.5
NETMASK=255.0.0.0
NETWORK=10.0.0.0
BROADCAST=10.0.0.255
ONBOOT=YES

My hosts file is:
127.0.0.1 localhost
10.0.0.5 x212903a
10.0.0.138 nameserver

My router default is 10.0.0.138 so I tried putting a static ip address as above in the hosts file and then also tried using dhcp with that address defined on the router but nothing works. I can ping myself and of course the loopback but the router ping says: "destination host unreachable". If I run ifconfig it tells me that I also have an eth0:9 card with a 192.x.x.x address but I only have one card in the nachine. This is a Realtek RTL8139 PCI card. What is this eth0:9 ? I've also tried configuring through the drakconf in wizard, normal and expert mode all to no avail either. Pulling my hair out here so please help a poor now almost bald old git who btw feels a complete wally as he's certified in OS/2, NT4, W2K and the local mental institution.

Try adding this to the /etc/sysconfig/network script and restart networking.

GATEWAY=10.0.0.138
GATEWAYDEV=eth0

service network restart

<edit> Unless you have a Class-A network you might want to change the Netmask to 255.255.255.0
