"Can't resolve host" as user, but works fine as root

Yea, so I've been having another rtorrent problem, though I think the problem is not within rtorrent.
When I open rtorrent, I'm getting a continuous "couldn't resolve host name" error when I try to connect to trackers, this is EVERY tracker, not just one. I messed around a little, decided to try to get it to work as root, and it connected fine, so it must be something with my permissions, but I'm not sure. the user has access to curl, dhcpcd. Can anyone help? I'd hate to run rtorrent as root. Ports are forwarded and such.

oh and I can ping hosts fine from the user account.

created a different user account, that user can resolve host names as well. no idea what the problem is.

Did you check resolv.conf permission too?

Did your user have access to your dns address?

Check your /etc/host.conf and /etc/nsswitch.conf too
