Can't connect to vmware linux web server

I'm running an fc9 install in vmware server under windows. Apache is up and running. If I run firefox from within the virtual os, I can connect to the web server using localhost, and I can connect using the virtual os ip address. I can also connect using telnet to port 80.

I can't connect to the virtual os using any of these methods from the windows host os, though. I can ping and ssh into the virtual os so I know the network is functioning, but I can't connect to the web server port. Nothing in the log files on the virtual os indicates that a connection was even attempted.

This is my first post and might belong in the server forum, but since the entire port is unavailable, I thought networking was the place. I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong.

Thanks!

I expect that you are running a firewall on the virtual machine, ensure that you are not blocking port 80.

sweet! iptables was running. Stopping that got my connection working. Silly me for thinking there would be a log entry when it denied a connection.

Thanks!

Thumbs up RE : Can't connect to vmware linux web server

You want to operate all of Linux from a web interface? Or certain parts of it? Webmin gives you some control over a Linux server.

No, I just couldn't connect to port 80 to view web pages on the linux virtual os. Stopping iptables did the trick.

I'm having similar issues

I'm running red hat 2.6 on vmware.
I can connect to the web server running on port 8080 and another one at 8081 using redhat browser.
But cannot connect using Windows 7.
I disabled Windows Firewall, Microsoft Security Essential, stopped iptables but still no luck.
I can ssh to the redhat using putty.

Any more options that I can try?

thanks for a help in advance.

regards

Windows firewall should not prevent you from accessing port 8080 or 8081 on another host, and neither should any security tool.

I would advise that you turn your windows security tools back on (they are there for a reason).

You might want to check your Apache configuration (it is possible that you have it set to connect to localhost only 127.0.0.1)

Additionally, once you have your webpage working externally, you may want to turn iptables back on and configure it to allow traffic to ports 8080 and 8081
