well just install ubuntu 7.10 on my Toshiba satellite M35

just configured my connection,

i have static ip address, so i manually configured my ip address, and dns

problem is, it does not connect..

i did couple of things, i bought friends router, and configured my eth0 to dhcp mode and it accepted ip address from router and i was able to ping router.

the problem is that i am not able to ping default gateway and dns provided by my ISP, if i am able to do it, i will be able to connect

It looks like there isn't any problem detecting your hardware which seems to be working fine. If it wasn't detected then you wouldn't even have the option to apply static settings. Your default gateway and name server addresses should be set to the address of the router. The router should then forward on any requests to your ISP. I suggest you just use the DHCP information from the router to avoid any problems.

my ISP cable comes directly to my lan card, router was just to test if my interface is working or not, my ISP cable comes directly to my eth0

Can't you just use the DHCP settings from your ISP? In America ISP's usually have a DHCP server that sends us the gateway and dns server addresses. Usually you will not see them reply to PING for security reasons. Can you just connect via DHCP and see if you can navigate to websites?

When you enter the static information from your ISP in /etc/network/interfaces you cannot connect to the ISP...is that correct?

I apologize if this is a dumb question but when you entered the static information did you restart networking with
Other than that I'm not sure what the problem could be. As long as the network devices (such as the routers & switches) are configured properly then anything else would be server based issues like if your ISP required that you use a Windows machine and join their domain. Can you just try receiving DHCP settings from the ISP? Sorry if these are dumb suggestions but this issue boggles my mind.

What static settings did the ISP give you? Any chance the netmask is incorrect?

A couple things to try:

1. ifconfig and route commands:

route del default # Delete the default gateway, just to be sure
ifconfig eth0 172.25.9.148 netmask 255.255.255.192
route add default gw 172.25.1.1


2. Make sure eth0 is the correct interface:
ethtool eth0

Make sure you see the following at the end of the ouput:
Link detected: yes

If you see 'no' for the Link detected, try eth1 and eth2. Although judging by the packets sent and received eth0 is probably the correct interface.

OK ... your default gateway/ip address/subnet mask are unusual, because 172.25.1.1 is not in the same subnet as your host address 172.25.9.146 255.255.255.192. Please double check your Windows XP machine and make sure these settings are correct, and please post the output of ipconfig /all from Windows here.

If they are correct, can you ping any other machines between addresses 172.25.9.129 and 172.25.9.191? Also, please post the output of the following commands:

route
arp -a

yes you are right, i already changed my subnet mask to 255.255.0.0
and i am able to ping my gateway

but setting that i used earlier r correct one and i am using that setting only in my windows xp
