You will not fry the modem. You can actually have (in some cases) your ISP supply you a secondary IP for such a problem, but other your correct you wont be able to use enet and usb at the same time.
i have the ntl cable modem, and a few people have tried eth and usb on it which fried it. and also, ive just paid £15 for cables and extensions and the like. i've had it working, so its confusing me why i cant get it working again.
As several years as an NTL cable modem tech ive never seen it fry by using usb & enet. You can use enet and unplug usb if you need to (this isnt helping you out though so im sorry)
This is a tricky issue but have seen simular problems when people have left the usb lead inserted during the OS re-install. Did you do this?
Last resort xerosis, try to re-install your distro but selecting the usb kernel from the install CD. This is probably what you did the first time you installed and have since been selecting bare.i. The worst thing that can happen at this point is that it doesn't work any better than it does now.
Originally posted by xerosis i can't connect via ethernet as i've stated above: an older computer is connected as well which only has a usb slot, if i used ethernet and usb, i'd fry the modem. i assume the connection's is working as i have it working on this machine.
Can you get a usb nic for the old computer? (make sure the nic is a supported by linux one)
I hate usb nics but if it is your only choice .....
I use RoadRunner and have never had any problems (I use Ethernet)
If you use more than one computer get a router they are cheap now.
ethernet IS the only way to go ....
Ok, Ive got RH9 installed and Ive been unable to config for the net... I beleive I was able to connect before(or was it just a dream?), but either way my adventures in building a 'dual boot' machine has called for a few re-installations since then. Anyway Im trying to establish a usb connection(vt6102 Rhine II), my cable modem(2wire) IS detected and configured by kudzu and someone ran me thru some commands which showed me the modem IS detected by the usb port. My hardware isnt on the Ethernet device list. Are there any words of advice for me???
