Bit Rate


Hi All,

I need to knwo how to determine the bit rate for an average message in a within a LAN or LAN to Backbone.

Check your textbooks and/or Google....if you need further help with your homework, try asking your teacher.

If this ISN'T a homework question, what version/distro of Linux are you using, and what are you trying to accomplish?

If you really need to know that, use an oscilloscope (the 'average message' and the 'within a LAN or LAN to Backbone' would be irrelevant, so actually I don't believe that this is genuinely what you mean). You probably want to know something like the data rate, which would be really quite different. Could you clarify please?

The bit rate on a LAN is as specified, 10,100,1000 Mbits per second. The baud rate may be different. Or the effective bit rate of the network payload taken in isolation from the Layer two transport overhead, or the application payload taken in isolation from the network layer overhead.

All depends on what you are trying to work out.
