What problem are you having? I hooked up all the BellSouth equipment, including jacking the Westell WireSpeed into the ethernet slot. I use Slack but I temporarily installed Mandrake at one point and when I booted into Mandrake I was just on. Ditto with the live Knoppix CD. Slack seems to not want to connect sometimes but usually does. So if you're having some specific problem, I probably can't help. But if you simply haven't started yet because you feel like you don't know how to, just hook up your equipment and install Mandrake and see what happens. And welcome to LQ.
