when i boot i get [FAILED] instead of [OK] when it load eth0 if i set eth0 to get an ip with dhcp. If i use static ip, it will load.
however, in both cases, the green led (act/link) on the adapter never goes on. I don't know if the problem is the adapter, the router or the config but please help! =)
Q1: Do you have the dhcp server enabled on the router?
(are any other machines successfully getting an IP address?)
(BTW, static IP will pass even if no cable plugged in)
Q2: Are you connected properly?
(not to an uplink port, known good cable, plugged all the way in, etc.)
Q3: Isn't rh7.2 kinda old?
dhcp enabled on the router;
i actually have 2 others computers getting an ip and working fine ( winXP and Win2000 )
tried to configure network with netconf and setup but nothing works.
for testing purpose, i use the same network cable ( the one on win2000 ) i unplug it and plug it in the linux computer. so the cable isn't the problem since i know it works with win2000
Do you have any other info about why it fails? relevant lines from /var/log/messages?
Have you tried manually starting dhcp client after startup? Maybe there is a little mixup in the order of things(dhcp client called before NIC driver loaded?) during startup. I don't know if rh7.2 uses pump, or dhclient, or dhcpcd, but try to start whichever one - manually, and see if it works after the driver has been verified loaded (look for 8139too in output from lsmod).
