backing up large files with rdiff-backup

Hi all,
I have backup server setup with rdiff-backup over ssh. working very well.
Some data is backuped from windows using rdiff with cygwin. But for the first time, when I back up large files (>>1G)over internet, it is alots of bandwidth. so I tried rdiff at the client machine to usb drive, then I copied backup dir from usb drive to backup server. then I tried to rdiff from client machine to server over internet to the same folder, that i copied. but rdiff refused to work on that folder. It just want to create or overwrite the folder and copy all the data again. Hope I am making sense. Anyone has experience like that?
