Accessing application information from within a socket

I am working on a project which requires me to find out which applications are responsible for which packets. Is it possible to determine this information from within the INET layer?

The reason for having the system determine source applications from this layer is so that it would not interfeer with the present implementation of applications and all packets ahve to pass through this layer if they are using the default networking stack

--------------------------
SOCKET
--------------------------
INET [TCP, UDP included]
--------------------------
IP
--------------------------
Ethernet
--------------------------

Thanks
