Question Access private web applications

Hello there, and sorry for the vague post title.
I would like to install netdata (https://github.com/firehol/netdata/wiki/Installation) on my vps, but I would like to keep the access to the login page private.
For do this, I think there are basically two ways:
* Use iptables/firewall rules to allow access to that port only to my ip
* Create a vpn
Since I would like to access these graphs also on mobile, I think that vpn is the best option.
My question is: am I right? Are there other options?
Also I tried to read some overviews on how to install openvpn but seems a bit complicated (and not sure if it's heavy to maintain). Any thoughts about it?
Thanks!

another option is to tell the server to ask for authentication (username and password, you define those) for that part.
all server software has an option for this; i know how to do it for apache and nginx.
searchphrase: "linux server basic authentication"

thanks @ondoho for the answer! Yeah right, using a basic http auth should work too. But it's both not very secure and practical IMO. I would prefer to totally block the access to it.

In your opinion, is a vpn a possible solution?
