A question about Ethernet Interfaces -- ONBOOT=no doesn't work

The ethernet configuration files are under "/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts" such as "ifcfg-eth0:1" etc. The file looks as follow:

Code:
DEVICE="eth0:1"
BOOTPROTO="static"
ONBOOT=no
IPADDR="172.23.17.10"
NETMASK="255.255.255.0"
ALIAS="yes"
I've set the ONBOOT=no. This means this device should not be activated at boot-time. But as I reboot the machine, this device is activated again. This means the option ONBOOT doesn't work.

Seems this is a bug of RedHat LINUX?

I sense a red hat type system. You need to know there are _2_ network rc scripts of interests.

/etc/rc.d/init.d/network - The old buggy script which has apparently become so convoluted that nobody in RH can figure it out for certain any more so it is supplied, but unsupported.

/etr/rc.d/init.d/NetworkManager - this is a bash script designed with gnome's NetworkManager in mind, as most people run straight to level 5 anyhow. It does start things even if you go to level 3. NetworkManager is this gnome thing which never failed to complain about stupid errors about 'keys' but somehow managed to connect me even when I couldn't connect myself, and fails to connect me when I thought everything was working :-/.

Both scripts use different setup files, in different locations.

Google "ONBOOT=no" gives several hits about an issue.

I would guess that the option "no" needs some quotes.
