3c59x (3COM) via_rhine (Realtek) under conflict.

Hello, community.

I have a Linux box running Slackware 11.0 and also two network cards inside. 3c59x (3COM) via_rhine (Realtek), both PCI.

I cannot have both working together, they keep in conflict.

For example, if I have my realtek together with 3COM, then the realtek doesn't works, I can't even ping another IP (sometimes it works, but then is the 3COM which doesn't works).

Then if the realtek is not working, I take off the 3COM from the box and it is working. I already tried to use two 3COM, but then NOTHING works. I know they are in conflict, I just don't understand why.

Does anyone here fell under the same situation before?

My dmesg:

are you using IPV6 ? if not then please try disabling it and try again.

To disable IPV6
edit /etc/sysconfig/network

Change:
NETWORKING_IPV6=yes
to
NETWORKING_IPV6=no

Cheers!

It's into my Slackware box and I'm not sure how to disable the ipv6 on Slackware.
But I'm going to check this later, at home. Now I'm at the work.

Thank you!

This might nit be really helping you, but I had the same problem last week. First I had a Realtek and a 3Com installed in this machine. They worked.

Then I added a second 3Com and there was no way I could get the Realtek to work with 2 3Com cards.

Two 3Com cards alone worked fine. Then I took out the Realtek and inserted a third 3Com. That worked as well. All 3 3Coms are identical.

On this machine I am running Debian Sarge and kernel 2.4.18-bf2.4, pretty old.

I faced once the problem that I could not get two 3Coms working at the same time, but that was with very old hardware, although kernel 2.6.8.

Nevertheless, it seems that the problem is somewhere related to hardware/mainbaord/BIOS. I have so many different machines with comparable kernel versions, and it is always a surprise how PCI NICs are behaving.

I only can recommend to move the NICs around in the PCI slots. There are different versions on PCI slots if I remember well, those which can be master and those which cannot. Try to change the sequence in which they are inserted. Try to load Knoppix and see what that does.

Thank you very much. Actually, I've tried to change the slots some months ago but it didn't work.

The only thing I didn't try was to use both 3COM, despite one 3COM and one Realtek.
I will try it as soon as I find one more 3COM card to test it (or realtek) and then I will tell you all if it worked or not.
