Want to Kick My Windows Mobile away from Toshiba Postedge G810

Hi,

I keep thinking to format my Toshiba Postedge G810's Windows mobile 6.1 and install a Linux OS inside. The OS in this smartphone is not stable at all and I feel really frustrating in rush.

Any embeded expert can advise me? I'm not familiar with Empeded Linux at all. Just thinking if I have a Linux devices then I able to make it better by myself. The Windows Mobile simply listen to Microsoft or Toshiba, not me.

Thank you very much,

Ks

I'm assuming you meant "Portege", not "Postedge"

I'm not an "embedded expert", but I ran Linux on my old iPaq h2215 that was cursed by Windows Moble 2003. I used the Angstrom distrobution, but I think that would get rid of mobile phone support. You could try Titchy Linux. Follow the instructions for installing on the HTC phone on your Portege. The way this is installed will preserve Windows Mobile in case you want to switch back. You'll need an SD card, which are cheaper then ever now. (Or micro-sd, if that's what the Portege uses) Titchy *might* support the mobile-phone features, but don't expect miracles.

Yes, it has an X11 GUI. I'm not sure how stable it is, but because you keep the original firmware, there's no chance of tearing up your device. You should make a complete backup though, as Windows Mobile keeps some data in RAM, which will be lost when you boot Linux.

ok, mean I need to buy a new sd card and install Linux inside? Existing sd card I remain as backup? Or I can install the linux in the existing sd card, it won't wipe my existing data and software?

You should probably buy another SD card. I used a 1 GB card when attempting to install on my iPaq (didn't work on it, wrong arch or something...). 512 MB might be enough.

Frankly, I have no idea. It might work, it might not. You'll have to see for yourself. But since you're booting of an SD card, there is no chance of breaking your device. If you don't like Linux, you can just restart and go back to Windows Mobile. Just make sure you have a backup, Windows stores some data in memory which will be lost during restart.
