If you're in College, bear in mind that there is a STEEP learning curve with kernel stuff, and then again doing anything Android related, and setting up a tool chain on your pc. Google held everyone's hand in the beginning, but I think those days are over.
That said, there is/was a 'virtual android' you can install to a pc without bricking your phone. Do your development on that.
