Why is there no Kali Linux here

Just found out about Kali Linux and it's Windows 10 Desktop so I have triple booted with Linux Mint 19.2 and Windoze.

The Windows 10 Desktop on the Kali is great I wonder if I can make a Linux Mint 19.2 with Windows 10 desktop?

Kali appears to use Ubuntu desktop as it's main desktop I wonder if I can make a cinnamon desktop instead of the Kali desktop.

Any ideas.

Kali is not intended to be a desktop and is a specialized distro for use by penetration testers. It is best run in a VM, at least in my experience.

No clue what you mean by "it's Windows 10 Desktop". There is no Windows 10 desktop built into Kali, unless you are talking about running Windows in a VM on Kali. That would be pointless actually.

Why is there no Kali Linux here? Are you asking about a Kali forum? IMHO I think it would be a bad idea.

You post is a bit confusing...

I assume you asking about linux distributions that run under Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). At the moment the only available distributions from the Microsoft app store are:

Ubuntu, Kali, OpenSUSE leap 15.1, debian, Alpine, and SUSE Enterprise

The latest Kali release by default uses xfce and as far as I know you can install just about any desktop.

Yes I have had a look at that. I think it is changing. Using the Windows 10 desktop it appears to perform well and I have made it look like my Cinnamon Desktop. I loaded by terminal and put on the desktop Libreoffice, Thunderbird, Chrome and Firefox.

Dual booting with Windows 10 allows Windows users to migrate to Linux and edit from the Windows 10 Kali to the old Windows 10.

I will work on it to see if I can get a Software Manager up so I do not use a terminal.

As to installation it is far easier than Linux Mint installation and there did not appear to be a problem with Networking gave an option of Wireless or Ethernet.

So I come back to the idea of making the Kali desktop a cinnamon version.

If I can get those awkward customers who refuse to even try Linux Mint to start with Kali Windows 10 I feel I can convince them to then triple boot to Linux Mint 19.2 with cinnamon desktop, which I consider is the best operating system available with a 5 minute learning curve in setting up the desktop.

Thanks for that great help.

So how can I change from xfce to the cinnamon desktop then?

Bad idea. As posted many many times, Kali is specialized and not intended to be used as a daily regular desktop.

I think you can just run apt-get install cinnamon and if it works you should be able to select it from the session menu although I don't run WSL and therefore no idea how the WSL version differs from the "real" one.

You need to read the Kali thread referenced by jsbjsb001 - Kali is not intended to be a desktop. Apparently you didn't't read that yet?

I am using it now and I disagree that it cannot be used as a regular desktop. I use the Windows 10 desktop and it works fine so far.

Well that's fine but it is not intended to be such. It is a pen tester distro and most of the tools included are to bee run as root. Something you would never do on a normal desktop. You can run whatever you want just don't expect to get much help here if you have issues.

No clue what the "windows 10" desktop is in Kali because the Kali version available from Kali has no such thing. Might be something Microsoft did to it to make it more attractive to their users.

I think it is not...

Perhaps you should also read Kali's own website, because that does *not* suggest "it's changing" at all...

There is a difference between "cannot" and "should not".

I *CAN* haul 5 tons of dirt using only my car trunk and making a lot of trips back and forth. SHOULD I??? Probably not; I can rent a truck or pay for delivery. Kali is set up for pentesting and security forensics; using it for playing any videos, music, or expecting things to work smoothly and without some good amount of effort isn't going to pay off in the long run. How much time to you want to spend rebooting, fiddling with things, etc., just to open an email that a friend sent with an attachment that may not open?

Use the right tool for the job; want a desktop distro, then stick with one. Want a highly specialized one that is configured to do one thing well? Then use IT for that particular task. There are times when using Windows is the correct answer as well.

Under WSL your probably correct since I believe it is using a regular kernel and you can not run any penetration tools that access direct hardware. In this case it is no better or worse then debian or Ubuntu.

As you can use scissors to peel potatoes. I disagree that it cannot be used. Although it is not really suggested.
