Why is Linux Mint Ulyana trying to install SystemD?

When I originally upgrade to 20, it did not try to install systemd.

Why is it doing it now?

My update manager just recommended I install SystemD on my Linux Mint Ulyana system. Synaptic shows systemd is not installed now.

The following installed files are found when searching for systemd in Synaptic:

Dbus-user-session
debconf
finalrd
gnome-logs
indicator-common
init-system-helpers
networkd-dispatcher
python3-systemd

Results of Uname -ar

Linux matthew-ThinkPad-T430 5.4.0-42-generic #46-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 10 00:24:02 UTC 2020 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Results of cat /etc/*release

Thanks in advance.

Linux Mint has used systemd since at least 18. I have not used Mint in years but I am certain an out of the box install of the latest version uses systemd. Very few Linux distros do not at this point in time.

Yes, but why now?

I upgraded from 19, and I don't think it was installed then.

Did the Linux Mint 20 upgrade uninstall systemd and now, a few weeks afterwards, re-installing it?

I am not an expert, but that doesn't sound right.

Thanks anyway!

It should have never left so to speak. Systemd has been in play for years. Odd that it would be there and then not. Did you attempt to remove it and replace with something else perhaps?

No.

I double-checked synaptic. Again.

Of course it was already installed.

I am not an expert. It just seemed weird.

Thank you for your help.

How many times did you dist-upgrade this particular install?
It is conceivable that you started with a non-systemd version of Linux Mint, I'd say at least 5 years ago, and only now has systemd itself become a hard dependency for something.

This is relatively new. I purchased a used Thinkpad from FreeGeek Chicago with Linux Mint 19 already installed.

The upgrade to Mint 20 was the first time I upgraded.
