Linux Mint has used systemd since at least 18. I have not used Mint in years but I am certain an out of the box install of the latest version uses systemd. Very few Linux distros do not at this point in time.
It should have never left so to speak. Systemd has been in play for years. Odd that it would be there and then not. Did you attempt to remove it and replace with something else perhaps?
I upgraded from 19, and I don't think it was installed then.
How many times did you dist-upgrade this particular install?
It is conceivable that you started with a non-systemd version of Linux Mint, I'd say at least 5 years ago, and only now has systemd itself become a hard dependency for something.

This is relatively new. I purchased a used Thinkpad from FreeGeek Chicago with Linux Mint 19 already installed.
The upgrade to Mint 20 was the first time I upgraded.
