In my experience, Flash v. 11 still seems to work okay. I have not experienced the problem you have described of lagging video, but, frankly, I don't spend all that much time in YouTube and the stuff that I play is limited to a relatively few posters.

If you would provide links to some of the videos that are giving you issues, perhaps someone who knows more than me could help with this.

An option that I have used is to go to the Adobe downloads page and under Select a Version, select to download the version with the tar.gz extension rather than the Ubuntu. Download it and go to the /home/user/Downloads directory where you should see this file. Right click on it and select the option to extract here. You will then have a directory with the same name minus the tar.gz extension. Go to that directory and you will see a file named "libflashplayer.so". As root user, copy that file to the /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins directory. You should see a file already there named "flashplugin-alternative.so". Move that out of the directory up to the mozilla directory. Re-open firefox and go to a test site for flash. Just tested this on Mint 17, no problems. I'd keep the flashplugin-alternative.so.

I opened firefox again and checked the plugins and it now showed the new plugin: 11.2.202.548 which had previously been: 11.2.202.424. Tested it at a flash test site and it worked.

Lagging could be the result of older hardware but if it works without lag in google-chrome and lags in firefox, I don't know. My Desktop computer is 6 years old and I had no problems watching the video without lag on firefox.

You could always try install freshplugin. It's a wrapper to allow pepperflash (which is used in Chrome) to run in firefox. In Debian I've found that it works FANTASTIC. In Mageia it barely works. Never tried in mint so no idea, but it's an option.
