Update 20.2 failed

Completed 20.1 to 20.2 upgrade. Selected "Restart Button". Computer restarted to black screen w/non readable verbage. Does "Restart" mean restart or shutdown and then restart?

I now have the drive with 20.2 upgrade connected to my main computer via USB. I can open it's home and open stuff from there.

On the menu of a desktop environment, "restart" commonly means shutdown and restart the computer. (On the menu of some window managers, such as Fluxbox, it can mean simply "restart the window manager.")

You might try booting to a Live CD/USB (the installation media might work), mounting the appropriate partition (probably /), and looking at the logs in /var/log, particularly boot.log and syslog. They might provide some hint as to what's going wrong.

Post any clues you find to this thread.

frankbell is on to something: "Restart" = "Reboot"; that said, at this point, why not simply apply all the updates to the already installed OS. Upon completion, reboot. Update Manager should then offer the option to "Upgrade to Linux Mint 20.2".

For what it's worth, I just did the online upgrade to v. 20.2 Cinnamon in a VM and it went smoothly, but, I must say, the menus in the upgrade process could be stand a bit of refinement.

There were times when I wasn't sure which application window I need to click my mouse in.
