Mint Maya - Mate cannot load peripherals or programs

I am a newbie and have just loaded Mint Maya with the Mate desktop and it will not load my printer or my Vodafone K3772Z modem.
My wireless mouse and keyboard works OK though.

I suspect pilot error and could do with some flying lessons.
Is there a full downloadable operations manual somewhere?

I would also suggest the book below after you read the above and spend some time playing with the system.
