linux lite 1.0.0

I have downloaded Linux Lite 1.0.0 to try on my non-PAE laptop, but when I boot the live DVD it presents me with a Linux Mint login screen, and I don't know the user name to type in, or the password. The distro will load no further until I "log in".

Looking on the internet, two suggestions are available; neither of which work:

Username: mint
Password: (none, just press enter)

Doesn't work.

Username: root
Password: (none, just press enter)

Doesn't work. Just tells me that admin cannot log in from this screen.

Does anyone have experience in this particular distro and can advise me which log in name to use? At the moment, the distro loads but I can go no further.

According to Distrowatch dot com, LinuxLite is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, not Mint. Not sure which ISO you have.

1.0.0 is the oldest release, if you want to use it, get the latest release, 2.2 from here -->http://www.linuxliteos.com/

There is online doc, install doc, ( step by step with pictures ) and a users guide. I'm sure you can find the answers there.

Thanks, but the reason I downloaded 1.0 is because it's a non-PAE PC. The current LinuxLite may be based on 14.04LTS (a PAE distro), but this one isn't. At least it loads on my machine, even if I am thwarted at the last moment by the log-in screen...

it always helps in a thread to post the link to the site you downloaded the iso from so members have a idea what you are talking about.

It will make it easier on you.

I'm downloading the version you have. I'll burn it, and see what happens. I'll let you know.

FWIW, I'm downloading 1.0.0 from http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/r...te/isos/1.0.0/

OK. I burned Linux Lite 1.0.0. This is Ubuntu, according to what I saw on the install DVD.

To log in, I used user root and just presses enter for the password. The install disc runs as root user.

The kernel that came with the .iso is called "3.2.1-32generic-pae". It appears this is a pae kernel.

Some questions come to mind.

Did you do an md5sum check on the .iso file before you installed the system? Was it correct?

The install instructions on the web site I posted earlier tell you create a user and password during the installation. Did you?

Did you modify the root password during the install?

Hmm. I didn't download it from a website; the iso was a torrent.

Even though, on booting up the disc, it identifies as version 1.0, when I put the DVD into my PC now, the disc has the name Linux Lite Beta 2. I'm not sure what version I've actually got, but I think you will agree that the word "beta" probably means I should not use this version but go looking for a version to download from their own site. I suppose it is possible that any beta version uses a different username or password.

I'm also looking at Linux Mint 13 xfce at the moment, which is a currently supported version and does non-PAE machines. I think on reflection this may be a better bet than an out-of-date Linux Lite, even if it does support non-PAE.

Didn't get as far as managing to run the live disc, let alone start an install.

But thank you for the time you have taken to answer my query.

You are welcome.

This is possible, but not very likely. I see you have a version identified as a 'beta 2'. The version I got from their web site was not beta. I spent some time yesterday and installed it in virtual-box. It took some time for me to figure out the v-box part, I did sort it though. The install was just what is documented on their web site. It does run a kernel as I posted earlier that supports PAE. My hardware supports PAE, so no problems here.

If you need a non-PAE system, I would suggest you look elsewhere. I run Slackware, and I know it comes with a non-PAE kernel on the install disk. Its there for people with older hardware.

If you are comfortable with Mint, that could work for you. Version 13 is dated however. Not sure what the support policy is for older Mint releases. You may want to look into that before you invest a lot of time in it.

My thoughts on Lite. After the install I ran an update. That took much longer than the original install. It downloaded a butt load of code. The end result was the system runs as expected. I had no problems going online. This is Ubuntu though. As such, I gave up on it several years ago. I like it even less today. I won't beat on it, let me say briefly it is due to the dependency system all Debain and its derivatives use; and system-d.
