Laptop overheating : Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon

Hi,
I am not exactly a Linux newbie but not a genius either. I have used Ubuntu,Fedora and now Linux Mint.
My problem is that my laptop overheats when I watch movies or browse either youtube or some "heavy" websites. Atleast that is when I think it does. And the laptop shuts down immediately. I browsed for solutions and now have installed tlp but the problem persists. Please help.

Thanks in advance !!!

How old is the laptop? Is the fan dirty? Thermal paste broken down (or the cheap crap pads manufactures put on the CPU)?

I make it a habit to tear into my laptop once a year and clean it out well and re paste. I have never had the issues you described doing this.
