gnome-sound-recorder 3.18.2, Mint 18 Cinnamon. Is there a way to record sound w/out using the microphone? I am unhappy with this version of gnome-sound-recorder. The previous version that I used on 17 did everything I needed. I could select microphone or line, adjust input level, and had more formats to record in. I could run a line from a bands sound system to input on the laptop. Could record anything coming out of the laptops speakers.
If that can't be done w/this version, how do I install the earlier version. Are there any other simple sound recorders. I definitely do not want to use Audacity or anything similar.
fortunately, there's plenty of software available for gnu/linux, which you can use.
audacity would have been my first recommendation; i take it you know how to search your repositories?
or maybe you can find something here: https://alternativeto.net/software/audacity/

As I said before I definitely do not want to use Audacity or anything similar. Audacity is very good, but I am not a recording engineer. Just too much to do on the fly. We want to run a cord from the sound system for later review. Also serves as protection from lawsuits from ASCAP, BMI, etc for playing their stuff even though we did not. Just want something to use as if it were a casette tape player. Quick and dirty.

Will do. I want something that will record anything playable on my laptop, Have multiple formats including .wav and have its own line in level control.

can you please elaborate?
there's no need to record files that already exist on your laptop - you can simply copy them.
what are you really trying to achieve?
please explain it to me as if I was a clueless newbie.
I want to be able to record any sound that can emit from the speakers on my laptop. I want to record any sound coming into the audio input port of the laptop. I want to be able to set the input level. Want to have multiple formats including .wav.
In short I want the recorder to work like the previous Gnome Sound Recorder.
If not How can I install the previous Gnome Sound Recorder? Where to get from? I used the previous version in 17 cinnamon. It did everything I needed to do.
One thing I forgot to mention is that I was recording phone conversations over Google Hangouts with distant family members about family history and recollections.
